Composition between Two Genres

The following video is a commentary on the lyrical analysis of the well-known song “Somebody that I Used to Know” by Wouter de Becker, known professionally as Gotye.

The finalized design of my project entails a hand-made illustration along with a written description of the illustration. The hand-made illustration contains allegorical elements as a means of portraying a message of intense emotional depth. The illustration depicts a heart that has elements that needed further explanation. The best way to accompany this was with a description that can guide my audience in the process of deciphering the allegorical content of the illustration. The illustration is symbolic by utilizing synecdoche or symbolizing something huge by using something smaller as a means of representing it. The illustration description is attached in order to assist the audience in interpreting the meaning of the illustration. I figured this would be most prudent since an undelivered message is something that is best to prevent when illustrating something with a deep message. While illustrating, I decided to utilize a simplistic design with minimal detail in order to purely focus on the delivery of the message. Because of this, the illustration lacks color and other supplementary detail. From a retrospective standpoint, there would be no repercussion with coloring the illustration; however, the point of the illustration is to deliver a message and as long as that message is delivered, then the purpose of the illustration has been fulfilled. The concept of the illustration derives from the topic of my research essay. In my essay, I briefly mention the factors that attribute to the ends of intense romantic relationships such as domestic abuse, inadequacies, and insecurities. The illustration further emphasizes these factors through symbolically interpreting them as chains which tear at the heart on each side. This shows the blatant effect that these factors have on relationships and how they contribute to the eventual ends of said relationships. The incentive of doing this was having a cohesive design that encompasses the theme and the overall significance of the genre and how it works as a tool to interpret the message
